Before You Update

Beforeyoucanupdateyourmobiledevices,youmustcreateasoftwareprofileinthe

AvalancheConsoleandinstallthesoftwarepackagetothatprofile.Youalsomustconfigure

andenablethesoftwarepackage.Forinformationoncompletingthesetasks,seeyour

AvalancheUserGuide.

Inordertoperformupdates,youalsoneedtoensureyouhaveaconnectionbetweenthe

mobiledeviceserverandthemobiledevice.Thiscanbeaserialconnection,aWLAN

connection,oraWWANconnection.

Thissectioncontainsinstructionsforthefollowingtasks:

• PreparingtheServerforaWLANConnection

• PreparingtheServerforaWWANConnection

NOTE:IfyouhaveAvalancheOnDemand,youdonotneedtoperformanyofthetasksfor

preparingtheserver.

Preparing the Server for a Serial Connection

You can configure mobile device servers to automatically listen for mobile devices using the serial

ports on the remote system.

Onlyoneapplicationonahostsystemcanmaintainownershipofaserialport.Ifthemobile

deviceservercontrolstheserialportsonthehostsystem,thennootherapplicationwillbeable

tousethem.Likewise,ifanotherapplicationonthehostsystem(forexample,Microsoft

ActiveSync)hascontroloftheserialports,thenthemobiledeviceserverwillnotbeabletouse

them.

Serialconnectionsarerequiredtoimplementmobiledeviceandserverauthentication.

Serialsettingsareconfiguredinthemobiledeviceserverprofile.Onceyouconfigurethe

connectionsandupdatethemobiledeviceserver,theserverwillupdateyourmobiledevices

accordingtothesettings.
